Thu 21 Oct 2021 18:50 - 20:10 at Zurich C - Future of Conferences
Covid has turned all conferences into online events. SPLASH 2021 is a hybrid event, but all but Americans have to attend it online due to travel bans. (The lifting of the travel ban per November is coming just too late.) While many are craving a return to normal, it is unclear when or even whether we will get there. Even when the pandemic subsides, we will have to face the climate crisis. So it is high time we consider the future of conferences. In this panel discussion with the SPLASH community we will explore possible scenarios. Some possible ideas:
- online conferences
- regional events
- one international SIGPLAN event
- hybrid events
or a combination of these or other ideas. We want to find a way for people in the community to meet and get to know each other; a feat not easily accomplished in (our current) online conferences. In the meantime we can perhaps address some of the downsides of the physical conferences (of the recent past) such as limited time for discussion. An important question is how to build an academic career in the absence of the ability to travel frequently.
